Teaching The Commandments

The big games are coming up, people talk about important factors that will affect the outcome of the game. People like to point out key factors such as avoiding turnovers, having balanced offense and defense, and point out other such obvious things. The biggest key factor in winning any game, the most important statistic of all is the final score. The other statistics you can’t really change, but the final score you can change. Otherwise we wouldn’t play the game.

I thought of how Jesus taught His disciples to stop being fishermen. Jesus told them to throw away their stinky nets and wash up and follow Him, and eat figs, instead. And so they did. It’s symbolic and literal.

Now, who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven? First, let’s see who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus told us who is the least.

St. Matthew Chapter 25

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them,
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it
unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have
done it unto me.

Who is the least in the kingdom of Heaven? The animals, of course. They are the weakest of all. If you hurt and kill God’s creatures, it is the same as if you are doing it to Him, because it is His creation.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord,
when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a
stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not
minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say
unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the
least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting
punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

I think that one of the greatest commandments would be not to eat flesh. Jesus speaks of the two greatest commandments and i think the third would be not to eat flesh. This commandment is to protect the weakest of all, God’s animals. If we realize who is the least in the Kingdom of Heaven, which are the animals, then Jesus tells us who is great in the kingdom of Heaven.

St. Matthew Chapter 5

19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least
commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be
called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but
whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be
called great in the kingdom of heaven.
