False Prophets Abound

Earlier i mentioned that Jesus commanded us to pray in private, in our own home. At first we might think this is an odd commandment, because it is the so-called Christian practice to go to church and pray at church, and have the pastor teach us. So why does Jesus tell us to stay at home and pray instead of going to church? It’s because Jesus wants to protect us from false prophets who will deceive us, false teachers who will teach us false doctrine and cause us to be lost.

St. Matthew Chapter 24

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

It seems contrary to contemporary Christian beliefs, because many people will say to you to go out and find yourself a good pastor to teach you. But Jesus taught us just the opposite. Jesus told us to stay home and pray and to have no man be a teacher to us of Scriptures. ONly Jesus can accurately teach us Scripture, no men can.

St. Matthew Chapter 23

8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and
all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father,
which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

Jesus is commanding us directly not to let other men teach us about Scripture! This is to protect us from false prophets. Because if we allow mere humans to try and teach us about Scripture, we are subject to human error and false doctrines. And how easy is it, for people to fall for false prophets and teachers? First thing you know, they are watching TV and they see some nicely dressed smooth talking TV preacher saying things they like to hear, and next thing you know, these people are led astray. Once led astray from the flock by the wolf, the sheep will be devoured by the wolf. Or they might see a nicely dressed 7 foot tall sturgeon and decide that sturgeon will be their Rabbi. This is exactly why Jesus tells us to stay home. If you want to learn about Scripture, pray in private and ask God to help you understand, and God will reward you openly. Only God can teach us Scripture properly. Men can only teach us their own opinions and their own confusion.

St. Matthew Chapter 6

TAKE heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them:
otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou
hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy
Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Now some people can teach Scripture, but we must be fully aware that there is more false doctrine being taught than Divine Scripture. That is why we must test everything that people tell us, to see if it is Scripturally based, or false doctrine. We will know them by their fruits.

Now let’s say a repairman wants to fix an automobile. That repairman is not going to go to a lecture, and listen to some guy give a speech on how to repair an automobile. No, that repairman is going to get the book and read for himself how to make the repairs.

And that’s just it. We don’t go to other men to learn things of Heaven, we go to God to learn Heavenly things. If we look to other men as our teachers, then it is highly likely that the man doesn’t even know God or doesn’t even know the Scriptures. Because if he did know God and the Scriptures, he would tell you to go home and read your Bible and pray to God in private, because Jesus is the Only Master.

St. Matthew Chapter 7

15 ¶ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s
clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of
thorns, or figs of thistles?
